What are the Benefits of Online Counselling?
Online counselling is an alternative therapy method compared to traditional face-to-face counselling. Despite this, it still provides many benefits to treat mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, or any other mental health issues. It’s also very convenient and beneficial for those who have trouble getting time off work or live far away from their therapist. Some additional online counselling benefits include the following:
Online Counselling is Convenient
Online counselling is convenient. For those who have mobility issues or just a very busy schedule, opting for online counselling is a wonderful option for you. All you need is your phone or computer and your therapist will be just a click away.
You do not have to factor in travel time, as your counsellor can provide the same high-quality service wherever you are. Whether you are on a break at work or want an early morning appointment before you get ready for work, accessing counselling from your phone or computer will save you time.
For those of you that travel for work, you do not need to schedule appointments based on the time when you are “in town”. You are able to access your counsellor no matter where you are located in the world.
Also, if you happen to forget your scheduled session, you can avoid cancellation fees by requesting a switch from face-to-face to online, so that you can attend your appointment.
This convenience ensures no work schedule or location interruptions to your journey to improved mental health.
Online Counselling Can Be More Comfortable for Some People
Accessing services from your own home offers a level of comfort that in-office counselling just may not. Although our offices are as comfortable and homey as possible, those that suffer from severe anxiety may find the task of getting there overwhelming. Managing anxiety levels by remaining in your own space that makes you feel safe and secure is key to finding effective solutions to reduce and manage symptoms.
How Does an Online Counselling Session Work?
Firstly, we ensure security from our end
An online counselling session is similar to an in-person therapy session in many ways. Most importantly, we want to ensure that the platform we use is safe and secure. We offer sessions using the secure online platform provided in our scheduling program, Jane. Jane is a company based out of Vancouver and according to Canadian regulations, stores all information securely in Canada. You can be confident that your information is not going to 3rd parties and that the video conferencing provided through Jane is private and secure.
Beginning an online session
At the start of the session, your counsellor will check in with you to review the last session. This check in provides you and your counsellor an opportunity to discuss if you tried any strategies learned from the last session. If so, your counsellor will encourage to discuss the details of this effort to determine what worked well, and perhaps, what didn’t.
During your session
During the session, your counsellor will be listening to you and provide feedback, advice, or suggestions based on the information you give. Your counsellor may also teach you cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies or use other evidence-based practices to help you identify patterns of thinking contributing to negative feelings and behaviors.
Concluding your session
At the end of the session, your counsellor will provide recommendations or resources that you can use to help manage your mental health. Your therapist may also suggest activities and lifestyle changes that can help improve your overall well-being. Additionally, a client and therapist that have been working together actively for some time will also typically have active check-ins to ensure goals are being met over time.
As you can see, counselling is the same as face-to-face. The only difference is the delivery platform. We understand how difficult it can be to manage mental health issues, which is why we’re here to support you every step of the way with whatever delivery method suits you and your lifestyle best. Our experienced and compassionate counsellors are committed to helping you reach your goals and find balance in your life.
