Trauma Counselling
Trauma counselling is a specialized form of counselling that helps individuals overcome and manage the psychological effects of trauma. Trauma memories can affect every part of the body and cause extreme emotional pain. When trauma is treated incorrectly, the individual risks “retraumatizing” themselves and may get worse instead of better. Counsellors providing treatment must be trained in trauma recovery methods and use an individualized approach.
Having specific trauma recovery training and other trauma tools, such as EMDR, is essential to help an individual alleviate trauma symptoms and reduce the power of the traumatic memory.
Some experiences that can cause trauma are:
Fear, Anxiety, or Loss
Adverse childhood experiences
Bullying
Physical attack
Natural disasters
Car accidents or a break in
Sexual assault
War and terrorism
Death of a loved one
Separation/Divorce
Generally, any event that causes intense fear or distress and we feel powerless to fix the problem can be considered traumatic. Sometimes we can process these events over a few days and feel better. Sometimes, the trauma seems to settle in and pop up when you least expect it. Another symptom of trauma is hypervigilance. You are on guard constantly and have difficulty relaxing. You feel like a “cat on a hot tin roof” and are constantly on guard.
When you feel this way, you need trauma counselling. At Incentive Counselling, we aim to help you overcome and heal from your trauma. Contact us today to schedule a consultation!
