  • Sexual assault
  • War and terrorism
  • Death of a loved one
  • Separation/Divorce

Trauma Counselling

What are the three types of trauma?

Trauma can be categorized into acute, chronic, and complex. Here is a brief breakdown of each category:

Acute Trauma

is a one-time event that causes a person to experience intense fear, helplessness, or horror. Acute trauma often leads to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Examples of acute trauma include military combat, natural disasters, car accidents, physical and sexual assaults, and life-threatening medical diagnoses.

Chronic Trauma

occurs when a person is exposed to traumatic events over an extended period of time. Chronic trauma often leads to depression or anxiety disorders. Examples of chronic trauma include child abuse or neglect, domestic violence, living in a war zone, or living with a mental illness.

Complex Trauma

results from multiple experiences that cause a person to feel unsafe in relationships and unable to trust others. Complex trauma can often lead to dissociative disorders like DID (dissociative identity disorder) and long-term physical and mental health problems. Examples of complex trauma include growing up in an environment characterized by abuse, neglect, or instability; prolonged exposure to violence or extreme poverty; or being the victim of human trafficking.

Trauma can be a complex subject to talk about, but it’s essential to understand. If you are struggling with trauma, contact us today for a consultation. You deserve to feel safe and supported!

Signs and Symptoms That You Need Trauma Counselling

The signs and symptoms of trauma can be varied and complex. Signs that you may need counselling include:

  • You feel like you’re always on edge or that something terrible will happen
  • You have trouble sleeping, or you have nightmares or flashbacks when you do sleep
  • You have trouble concentrating and remembering things
  • You’re always jumpy or easily startled
  • You may have trouble regulating your emotions (anger)
  • You feel numb and disconnected from yourself, other people, and your surroundings

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be beneficial to seek out professional counselling.

How does Trauma Counselling Work?

Trauma counselling is a process that helps people overcome the effects of trauma, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, fear, anxiety (panic attack), loss, post-traumatic stress disorder, natural disasters, car accidents, sexual assault, war and terrorism, and dissociative identity disorder.

The first step in any trauma counselling session is identifying what caused the trauma and how it affected you. This may include looking at your behavior before and after the event, or exploring how you feel about it now. With our counsellors, both Wendy and Connie will help you develop ways to cope with these feelings and symptoms over time.

We will also strive to better understand the impact of the traumatic event and identify any resilience factors that may have helped you in the past. This process involves teaching skills such as relaxation techniques, developing healthy coping mechanisms, exploring safe ways to process emotions, and setting life goals.

Trauma counselling can be conducted through individual sessions, and sessions may focus on topics such as dealing with emotional pain, understanding triggers, developing positive coping strategies, reducing stress and anxiety, and creating a support network. Fortunately, with the right support, counselling can be an invaluable aid to those who have experienced traumatic events.

What are the benefits of Trauma Counselling?

Trauma counselling has numerous benefits including the following:

  • You will learn how to develop healthy coping mechanisms to deal with your feelings
  • You will learn how to manage stress and anxiety in an effective manner
  • You will be able to express yourself without feeling judged or pressured and slowly learn to open up about your feelings

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Anyone who has experienced a traumatic event and is struggling with unwanted coping strategies or behaviour, anxiety, or depression should consider seeing a trauma therapist. It doesn’t matter if it was an accident or an act of violence, if the experience has left you feeling unsafe, anxious, depressed, or angry with yourself, then it’s time to seek help.

It depends on each client. Some people need only a few weeks of therapy to feel better, while others may need more time depending on their trauma and other issues they might have in their lives (like depression or anxiety).

Counselling costs will vary depending on the educational level and experience of the counselor providing service to you, and the type of counselling you are seeking.  For the most part however our rates are as follows:

  • Individual counselling varies from $120 – $160 per 1-hour session.
  • Couples counselling is from $120 – $175 per 1-hour session.

Some counseling services, such as programs offered will have costs for the entire program, not per session costs, so be sure to reach out to us for further details!
